Spotlight: SFX Entertainment Continues To Disgrace "EDM" Culture
This past Saturday morning, label heads and artists alike received a letter from Beatport informing them that their hard earned royalty and music sales are currently "trapped" due to problems with Beatport's parent company, SFX Entertainment.
This is only the most recent in a string of failures resulting from SFX Entertainment’s poor management and lack of insight into the very business they dominate. Just last month SFX owned TomorrowWorld Festival in Atlanta was forced to cancel of the later half of Saturday’s lineup due to extreme weather, forcing the 100,000 without camping passes off the festival grounds and instructing the remainder to seek shelter, the closest being nearly 5 miles away. While this could have been managed with proper planning, TomorrowWorld organizers were unable to provide reliable transportation or even water to attendees, leaving those without cars to either pay exorbitant fees through Uber or walk home. To add insult to injury, those same 100,000 attendees were prevented from entering the festival on its final day, as the damage caused by the storm prevented transportation to and from the grounds.
In the past, Electric Feels has been primarily dedicated to spreading good music and making sure our fans are well informed of all the incredible things happening in the world of electronic dance music. This, unfortunately, is incredible in a different sense; the largest name in electronic dance music promotion and sales has repeatedly failed both the artists they rely on and the fans that come from around the world to attend their festivals. SFX Entertainment has risen to a position where their actions reflect upon festival and EDM culture as a whole, in spite of their shallow roots. As long as SFX holds onto festivals like TomorrowLand, TomorrowWorld, Mysteryland, and Life in Color their actions will have significant influence in the direction public perception of EDM culture and direction the rest of the promotion industry takes.
